Consumers’ taste for rarity drives sturgeons to extinction
The international market for luxury goods puts pressure on many wildlife species, with potentially irreversible consequences for many of them. Although classical economic theory suggests that trade alone would not drive a rare species to extinction, in practice numerous species are being threatened by overexploitation. This is for example the case for sturgeons, exploited for their caviar, of w...
متن کاملTaking a stand against illegal wildlife trade: the Zimbabwean approach to pangolin conservation
Pangolins are increasingly threatened by demand for their scales, which are used in traditional medicines, and for their meat, which is consumed as a luxury. As populations of Asian pangolins decline, the demand is shifting to the four species in Africa, where local cultural use may already pose some level of threat. During − a total of pangolin-related seizures (surrendered and conf...

متن کاملConservation Action Based on Threatened Species Capture Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Richness in Breeding and Wintering Populations of Central Asian Birds
Although phylogenetic diversity has been suggested to be relevant from a conservation point of view, its role is still limited in applied nature conservation. Recently, the practice of investing conservation resources based on threatened species was identified as a reason for the slow integration of phylogenetic diversity in nature conservation planning. One of the main arguments is based on th...

During an investigation on pteridophytes (ferns) of Guilan province (N Iran), 402 specimens were studied. Of these, 44 species, under 21 genera, belonging to 13 families, were identified. Based on the approved instruction given by the "International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN)", after performing the filtering stage, 17 species were identified as endangered...
